I appreciated your thoughts on making a living writing. I'm in a similar boat having launched a paid investment newsletter a year ago this month. It's like "if I could just 10x my subscribers I'd be all set". I get frustrated at all the marketing, funnels, etc. and just want to focus on the core product. That's perhaps the worst part of it. Anyway enough of this rant, just wanted to say hello to a fellow traveler.

I wish I had better advice than studying how successful substacks do it (of which there are a bunch in the finance niche), pick up best practices, and then just keep going. It's a marathon but don't give up.

That + find your own way of doing it. Kind of like how you should learn a lot from Buffett *while* always keeping in mind that you aren't Buffett, so you have to find your own spin on things, the angle that works best with your own wiring.

Buffett didn't do it the way his mentors did it, even if he learned a lot from them, so I think the same applies here.

That's how I'm thinking of it, anyway.

"Escape competition through authenticity" and all that.

Cheers 💚 🥃

I have to say, it's so disheartening to find that a writer of your calibre can't make this financially viable. I only discovered your work two weeks ago by complete accident. I'm a hard person to get to part with cash but I thought this content is so good that it would be a sin not to be a paying subscriber.

I think it will just take more time and also more focus/a cleaner product offering. I can be a slow learner but what many have told me is finally registering. I have no intent to stop writing and am confident a good solution will present itself.

I think this line also has a network effect - can take time to build up but economies of scale can kick in after a threshold.

Just some random thoughts -

1. Check Russell Clark - a highly successful fund manager who had the courage to return money before hitting massive losses arguing regime has changed and his HF may not be appropriate.

2. Well Elon Musk said cant change the world with 8-9 hrs a day of work, need to be 16 :D But i think its more about organizing and focus. Elon handles solar cells, space and cars - definitely not possible in 8-9 hours.

I'm def not working 8 hour days but I take your point on organization.
